Margaret Swanson and Ann Macbeth
London: Longmans, Green & Co, 1916
With a Preface by Margaret McMillan
With 8 Coloured Plates and Numerous Other Illustrations
This delightful book, written by two key members of the renowned Glasgow School of Art is profusely illustrated with both made samples and technical details. Presented in three sections (the Young child, 12-14 yrs, 14-18 yrs and 18-24 yrs) and organised in lessons from stitching to making simple patterns. The book is thorough and substantial in terms of skills presented. It is also detailed enough for those wishing to undertake reproduction or restoration of these items. The book includes additional commentary that outlines the philosophical approach too, with the necessity for allowing the children freedom of expression in experimental work and "Beauty must come back to the useful arts, and the distinction between the fine and the useful arts be forgotten."
An important book in the history of 20th century needlework, with the Glasgow School influence much in evidence in the 8 coloured plates, which include 2 panels embroidered by Ann Macbeth.
