BARBIZON HOUSE 1935. AN ILLUSTRATED RECORD. 1935, London, folio, 43 tipped-in black and white illustrations, three-colour pochoir style cover by Frank Brangwyn, heavy cartridge stock, limited edition, number 21 of 500 copies, this inscribed to Mr and Mrs Bertram Nicholls [Bertram Nicholls artist, 1883-1974 cf. Drying the Sails at the Tate Gallery] from Lockett Thomson, the son of the founder. Corners knocked, spine faded, cover edges chipped, cover at lower spine 2cm lifted, otherwise good. Internally clean, tight and unmarked.
A record of some of the pictures exhibited at the gallery in the year, with lovely catalogue notes and essay/review of the year's art market and sales and a further longer essay on Gainsborough by Arthur Kay. Artists illustrated include; Sargent, Romney, Hoppner, Constable, Bonington, Reynolds, Raeburn, Opie, Beechey, Turner, Hobson, Morland, Whistler, Watts, Rossetti, Burne-Jones, Steer (several), Brangwyn, Cameron, Clausen, Millet, Corot, Daubigny, Fantin-Latour and others.
There are not many of these on the market and few survive in good condition. This is a nice copy of the 1935 Record.
